Nutritious Back-to-School Recipe Round-Up

New backpacks, new shoes, and somehow every kid in the house is hungry all over again by 3pm. Whether you're packing lunches or just trying to get everyone fed before the bell, here's a round-up of easy, nutritious ideas to get the year started right.

INGREDIENTS

From BC produce to your favourite sandwich bread, find everything you need for school lunches at your local Tru Value Foods!

METHOD

Turkey & Cheese Pinwheels
Take a few slices of deli turkey and a layer of cream cheese, roll them up in a soft flour tortilla, and slice into pinwheels—easy for little hands and easy to pack. Swap in ham or ham and cheddar if that's what's in the fridge.

Classic Deli Sandwich, Cut Into Shapes
Sliced bread, sliced deli meat, a smear of mustard or mayo, and your favourite cheese—simple lunchbox staples done right. Use a cookie cutter to turn ordinary sandwiches into stars, hearts, or whatever shape gets a sandwich actually eaten.

Apple Slices with Peanut Butter Dip
Crisp BC apples, sliced and tossed with a little lemon juice to keep them fresh until lunchtime, served with a small container of peanut butter for dipping. About as close to a guaranteed hit as lunch gets.

Kid-Friendly Peanut Butter & Banana "Sushi"
This “sushi” is all about fun, not chopsticks. Bananas get coated in creamy peanut butter, rolled in chocolate puffed rice for a little crunch, and sliced into bite-size rounds. Kids can help with spreading, rolling, and naming their favourite “sushi” pieces, which usually means they disappear fast. It’s quick, hands-on, and always a hit after school.

Overnight Oats in a Jar
Rolled oats, milk, and yogurt mixed the night before, topped with berries in the morning. No cooking, no rushing, and it holds up fine in a backpack until snack time.

Veggie & Hummus Snack Boxes
Carrot sticks, cucumber rounds, and bell pepper strips with a scoop of hummus on the side. A good way to sneak in some vegetables without anyone noticing they've been snuck in.

Homemade Granola Bars
Oats, honey, and a handful of whatever's in the pantry—nuts, seeds, dried fruit—pressed into a pan and cut into bars. Skip the packaging and the mystery ingredients from the store-bought kind.
